Who are FemAid

FemAid is an unaffiliated, independent, non-profit organization based in Paris, run by a team of women including a teacher, a novelist, a journalist, an art historian and an anthropologist, who have worked in humanitarian aid, in particular in war zones. We have previously been particularly active in Bosnia with the 'Enfants de Bosnie', an NGO which brought help to women and children in the suburb of Sarajevo, culminating in the reconstruction of a major primary school in Dobrinja.

Since late 1999 we have been working with Afghan groups including RAWA (the Revolutionary Association of Women of Afghanistan), the only secular feminist group in Afghanistan who, for the past 25 years have been fighting every form of oppression and degradation, especially fundamentalists opposed to equal rights for women. In view of the wretched poverty and systematic oppression of women within Pakistan and Afghanistan, we have also, from time to time, attempted other projects with local groups equally working for women and children both in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Help for the victims of the earthquake in Kashmir (on the Pakistani as well as the Indian side) was our major project for the end of 2005, followed by the continuation of projects especially in Afghanistan from 2005. The newest project has been the youth library in Farah from 2006 and since 2008, help for Kabul University daycare centre. In 2007, we successfully organized ouyr first project in a village in Senegal, planting mangoes that were given to a women's group in the memory of our dear friend and supporter Anita Feltus from LA.

Funding is the major issue: after 9/11 donors for Afghan causes were far more generous than they are now as other pressing issues fill the head-lines. By 2005, our funding has sunk and we have had to gradualy cut back on our projects to work on those we hope to maintain on a year to eighteen-month basis We consider that the help we bring is not only financial- there is the expression of feminist solidarity, logistical help and expertise in fields concerning aid, organisation and problem analysis we can bring and also the emotional involvement with these great young people and their families we have known and been following for all these years.

FemAid has in the past been supporting several of RAWA’s projects over the years within Afghanistan and Pakistan and has started others in the region. This has been possible through international internet solidarity.

We have worked on maintaining an orphanage in Peshawar, which houses 42 children and two schools for refugees, including one in a refugee camp in the border area. These projects are essential for the desperately poor Afghan refugees otherwise deprived of any real assistance from the Pakistani authorities which have been truly overwhelmed by the presence of three million refugees. Today, we concentrate on vocational projects.We make a point of checking out personally our projects twice a year so that direct information can be given about those we support in Pakistan.

We also work on projects specifically directed to the Pakistani population. We have sent medical aid and school supplies to children from the Hunza area in Gilgit, Pakistan through NAWA, the Northern Areas Women Association, linked to the Aga Khan foundation and similar help to school children of the rural areas of NWFP, the frontier area where the camps are, through PARD. We also support the three girls, who come from the poorest part of Islamabad, like most of the Christian community, at the privately-run Catholic school of Hatoon-e-Fatima.in Islamabad.

We have also organized several medical projects and convoys of medical aid to Kabul Quetta and Islamabad (for RAWA’s dispensaries as well as the Rabia Balkhi hospital in Kabul). We are organizing the training birth attendants in refugee camps, Afghan maternal mortality being the highest in the world.

All advice is based on real practical experience, but nevertheless, we cannot be held responsible for any unforeseen or unpredictable actions or consequences ensuing from recommendations we may put forward.

Whilst not affiliated to any political party, we perceive ourselves as sensible women approaching middle age, independent feminists of the Third Millennium working for a democratic world where men as well as women will be liberated from social , national and religious prejudice.

FemAid est une association Loi 1901 indépendante et non-affiliée, basée à Paris qui défend les droits et la dignité des femmes et des enfants afghans et pakistanais, à travers des projets de éducatifs et sanitaires. Elle a été créee par une équipe pour le moins cosmopolite, composée d'une enseignante, d'une romancière, une journaliste, une historienne de l'art, et une anthropologue qui ont toutes travaillé dans le domaine de l'aide humanitaire, en particulier dans les zones de guerre. Notre association précédente 'Enfants de Bosnie', s'est chargée de projets éducatifs dans le quartier sinistré de Dobrinja pendant la guerre en Bosnie et de l'organisation de la reconstruction de l'école primaire Skender Kulenovic, où le gouvernement français, pour la première fois, a participé.

Depuis fin 1999 par le biais du site FemAid qui précède l'association, nous avons choisi de travailler principalement, mais non pas exclusivement, avec l'association de femmes afghanes RAWA, les aidant au départ à financer l'enseignement clandestin des femmes en Afghanistan, à la barbe - c'est le cas de le dire- des Talibans. Cela a été possible par le bias de la solidarité Internet.

FemAid ne bénéficie d'aucune subvention et dépend entièrement de vos dons.

Après les événements de septembre 2001, les donateurs se sont montrés généreux. Cet enthousiasme est retombé et a fait que, en 2005, nous sommes réduits à nous concentrer sur des projets plus modestes que nous pouvons assurer sur une période de un an à dix-huit mois. Nous estimons néanmoins que nous avons plus à offrir que de l'argent: un engagement féministe durable, une aide logistique, une analyse extérieure et des liens affectifs qui nous lient à ces jeunes gens exceptionnels ainsi que leurs familles.

Depuis 2001 , nous travaillons ensemble sur plusieurs projets en direction de réfugiés afghans au Pakistan et d'autres au Pakistan, décrits en détail sur le site.
Nous avons pris en charge un orphelinat abritant 42 enfants à Peshawar et de deux écoles destinées aux réfugiés, dont une dans un camp de réfugiés à la région frontalière entre les deux pays.

Nous avons organisé des convois d’aide médicale en direction de Kaboul et au Pakistan et amorçons pour septembre 2005, des cours d'aide à l'accouchement destinés aux femmes réfugiées, afin de les équiper de notions de base d'obstétrique dans ce pays où la mortalité maternelle est la plus élevée au monde.

Nous avons collaboré également à des projets d’aide pour des enfants pakistanais dans la région de Hunza et au NWFP (la région des camps) et nous soutenons la scolarité, à l'école Hatoon-e-Fatima de trois adolescentes chrétiennes dans un bidonville d’Islamabad- la communauté chrétienne étant une des plus pauvres dans le pays. Nous soutenons d'autres jeunes afghans pour leur frais de scolarité, en particulier Haroun, à Peshawar et Najia, Feryal, Salima and Mashkan à Kaboul
Nous nous rendons régulièrement sur place pour évaluer le développement de nos projets.

Pour la fin de 2005, nos efforts ont été concentrés sur l'aide aux victimes du tremblement de terre au Cachemire, tant du côté indien que pakistanais.

A parir de 2006, nous avons commencé à travailler sur le projet d'une bibliothèque pour jeunes dans la région de Farah, près de la frontière iranienne.

En 2007, nous avons lancé notre premier projet au Sénégal, le don de mangueirs à un collectif de femmes dans un village, à la mémoire d'une amie chère Anita Feltus de Los Angeles.

En 2008, lors d'un nouveau voyage en Afghanistan et un séminaire à l'université de Kaboul organisé par notre association alliée www.womeninwar.org, nous avons résolu de poursuivre nos projets et amorcer une reflexion suivie sur la mortalité maternelle

Toutes nos opinions et nos conseils sont basés sur une expérience vécue, mais néanmoins nous dégageons toute responsabilité des conséquences imprévues suite à des conseils que nous aurions pu donner de bonne foi.

Bien que non affiliées à un quelconque parti politique, nous nous considérons comme un groupe de feministes sûres d'elles-mêmes, luttant pour un troisième millénaire démocratique où les hommes aussi bien que les femmes seront liberés de toute forme de discrimination sociale, nationale et religieuse.
